About Tax Exodus
Why This Exists
Tax Exodus is an independent resource for digital nomads, remote workers, and high-income professionals who want to understand how much they could save by relocating to a lower-tax country.
The tax calculator compares your current tax burden across 17 origin countries against 12 low-tax destinations, using real tax brackets, social contributions, and cost-of-living data. The blog covers the practical, legal, and financial details of actually making the move.
Every guide is written from the perspective of someone who has done it — not from a marketing agency or content farm.
About Damien Lee
I'm an Australian expat and DeFi professional based in Malaysia. I relocated from Australia in 2023 after calculating that I was paying over $200,000 per year in combined income tax, capital gains tax, and Medicare levy on a six-figure income.
After navigating the ATO's four residency tests, the Australia-Malaysia Double Tax Agreement, and the DE Rantau visa process, I built Tax Exodus to document everything I learned — and to help others run the same numbers I did before making the decision.
What I Know
- Australian tax non-residency: First-hand experience with the ATO's Resides Test, Domicile Test, 183-Day Rule, and departure tax on unrealised capital gains.
- Malaysian tax and visas: Living under Malaysia's territorial tax system. Experienced with the DE Rantau digital nomad visa and MM2H programme.
- DeFi and crypto taxation: Professional background in decentralised finance. Deep understanding of how DeFi transactions, staking, liquidity provision, and bridging are treated across jurisdictions.
- Multi-country tax planning: Research-driven analysis of tax residency rules, double tax agreements, and departure tax regimes for 17+ countries.
- Expat financial infrastructure: Practical experience with Wise, international banking, health insurance (SafetyWing, Cigna), and cross-border payment systems.
Editorial Standards
- Primary sources only: Tax rates and rules are sourced directly from government tax authorities (ATO, HMRC, CRA, IRS, LHDN, IRAS, etc.). Every guide links to official sources.
- Real numbers: Articles use specific income levels ($150k, $300k, $400k) with actual tax bracket calculations — not vague estimates.
- Updated regularly: Tax rates and visa requirements change. Content is reviewed and updated when legislation changes.
- Not tax advice: Tax Exodus provides informational content to help you understand your options. Always consult a qualified tax professional before making decisions.
